Nasdaq tumbles as prediction markets debut, AI chip bets waver — June 26, 2026
S&P 500 -0.01% · Nasdaq -0.46% · Dow +0.14% · VIX 18.9 — June 26, 2026
The Nasdaq fell 0.46% today while the S&P 500 barely budged and the Dow eked out a gain—a rare divergence that says everything about where the weakness lives. Breadth was brutal: only 27 of the top 100 most active stocks rose; 73 fell. The culprit isn't hard to find. Prediction markets arrived on American soil in earnest today. Charles Schwab is expanding into them, and Cboe launched Cboe Predicts with retail brokers now able to trade binary index contracts. That's not inherently bearish—but it's a distraction, and in a market already jittery about AI valuations, any new volatility outlet matters.
The damage showed up in semiconductor and quantum stocks almost immediately. Cerebras (CBRS) cratered 19.6%, despite an analyst note suggesting it could challenge traditional AI giants—a good headline that couldn't outrun the broader chip anxiety. Quantum names got hammered too: D-Wave (QBTS) dropped 8.2% even after announcing dual-platform shifts and U.S. orders, and Rigetti (RGTI) fell 8.2%. Navitas Semiconductor (NVTS) tanked 14.4% after AlpSemi's fundraise announcement, though ostensibly that was a bullish signal for the solid-state power switch space. Rocket Lab (RKLB) slid 10.2% despite winning three NASA launches—a real win that the market simply didn't want to buy today.
There were scattered winners. Sunrun (RUN) rose 12.6% and Rocket Companies (RKT) gained 9.4%, suggesting mortgage and solar plays found some safe haven. Morgan Stanley raised American Electric Power's price target, which may have helped utilities hold steadier than tech. But with breadth this negative and the Nasdaq's decline, today belonged to the sellers—and to the new market infrastructure that just gave them more places to trade their uncertainty.
