AI Boom Hits a Speed Bump as Chip Stocks Crater — July 3, 2026
S&P 500 +0.00% · Nasdaq -0.80% · Dow +1.14% · VIX 16.1 — July 3, 2026
The market can't decide what it believes. The S&P 500 went nowhere today, the Dow climbed 1.14%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.8%—a split decision that masks a violent repricing underneath. What's really happening: the AI trade that drove the second quarter is colliding with reality. Chip stocks got demolished. Micron down 10.6%. Intel off 9%. KLA, Marvell, Corning—all in freefall. Even the cloud infrastructure names that were supposed to benefit from the AI buildout took hits: CoreWeave dropped 13.9%, Riot Platforms slid 12.5%.
The proximate cause is messy. Meta jumped 8.8% after joining a video patent pool, but CoreWeave—which was supposed to be Meta's AI cloud play—cratered on reports that the partnership hit a snag. That's the whipsaw. Nebius, a Russia-linked cloud company, got crushed 17%. Wipro, the Indian IT outsourcer, fell 16.9%. Even Flex, the contract manufacturer, is looking "fully priced" to analysts despite a small value gap.
Here's what the market is actually pricing: the AI capex supercycle may not need as many chips as Wall Street spent Q2 telling itself. Or the valuations got too far ahead too fast. Breadth was dead even—49 up, 51 down in the top 100 most active stocks. That's not conviction.
Wall Street headlines are still bullish on the macro: $4 trillion in M&A coming, AI funds unstoppable, the Dow about to do something it hasn't in 155 years. But the tape doesn't lie. When the stocks that are supposed to build the AI future are getting sold, ask yourself: who believes the narrative?
Tomorrow's jobs report could reset everything. Or it could confirm that growth expectations are cooling and valuations need to follow.
