Amazon's low-Earth orbit satellite internet business, Amazon Leo, has partnered with South Africa's Herotel to launch "evry," a satellite broadband service aimed at underserved rural communities. The residential service is expected to launch commercially in 2027, leveraging Herotel's nationwide footprint of more than 350,000 customers, 550 locations, and 120 offices to provide installation and customer support. The partnership seeks to bridge South Africa's connectivity gap, where traditional fiber and wireless networks are often uneconomical to deploy. Amazon has also expanded its African satellite strategy through an earlier agreement with Vodafone's subsidiary Vodacom to connect remote cellular base stations across the continent. The deal positions Amazon to compete with SpaceX's Starlink, which remains unable to enter South Africa pending regulatory changes to foreign satellite licensing requirements.
